The game was tied through ten innings. Then Arizona's bullpen came apart. A throwing error by pitcher Ryan Thompson in the 11th turned a close game into a Milwaukee victory, as the Brewers scored four times in the frame to beat the Diamondbacks 7-4 on Friday night at Chase Field.
Garrett Mitchell set the tone early, hitting a two-run homer to center in the second inning — a 435-foot shot that scored Jake Bauers and gave Milwaukee a lead it would carry for most of the night. Mitchell finished 1-for-4 with 2 RBI. Brice Turang was the Brewers' most productive bat, going 3-for-6 with 2 RBI, including a single in the third that scored Turang and added to the cushion. Bauers also went 3-for-6 with an RBI.
Arizona answered in the third. Gabriel Moreno singled to right to score Ketel Marte, and then Nolan Arenado doubled to left, scoring both Corbin Carroll and Moreno to tie the game at 3-3. That was as far as either offense would get for the next seven-plus innings. The game stayed knotted until the 11th.
In the top of the 11th, Jackson Chourio reached on an infield single to the pitcher, and Blake Perkins and Cooper Pratt scored when Thompson threw wildly on the play, with Christian Yelich also reaching safely on the error. Two runs in, and the lead was Milwaukee's. Turang then singled to left, scoring Yelich and Chourio to push the advantage to 7-3. Thompson was charged with the loss, falling to 3-2 with a 2.97 ERA, allowing 4 runs — 2 earned — in 1.0 inning. Grant Anderson, who worked 2.0 innings and allowed 1 run (0 earned), earned the win to improve to 2-3 with a 3.35 ERA.
Ildemaro Vargas singled to right in the bottom of the 11th to score Lourdes Gurriel, but it was too little. Milwaukee improved to 53-32, remaining atop its division. Arizona dropped to 43-43.
