The game was effectively decided before the third inning began. Cleveland's five-run second inning against MacKenzie Gore set a margin Texas could never close, and the Guardians held on for a 9-4 victory at Progressive Field on Wednesday.
Austin Hedges was at the center of the damage. His sacrifice bunt opened the scoring in the second, bringing home Brayan Rocchio. Then, with two runners already aboard, Hedges came around to score on a Gore wild pitch. David Fry capped the inning with a three-run homer to right center, 380 feet, clearing the bases and pushing Cleveland to a 5-0 lead. Fry finished 1-for-3 with 3 RBI. Hedges went 1-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBI as well, adding a two-run shot to left center in the eighth that extended the lead to 9-4. Chase DeLauter contributed a 3-for-5 effort with an RBI single in the seventh that scored Steven Kwan.
The second inning unfolded quickly and decisively. Rocchio scored on Hedges' squeeze bunt to break a scoreless tie. Arias then crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Gore. Fry's homer — his fifth of the season — made it a five-run frame. Cleveland added two more in the seventh, with Kwan scoring on DeLauter's single and DeLauter later coming home on a wild pitch by Santos. The Guardians tacked on two more in the eighth on Hedges' homer.
Gore absorbed the loss, falling to 5-7. He allowed 5 runs on 7 hits over 5.0 innings, striking out 7 but walking 1, with a ERA of 4.31. Texas did chip away — Nicky Lopez's double in the sixth scored Alejandro Osuna to make it 3-5, and Elias Diaz hit a solo homer to left center in the eighth — but the Rangers never threatened to erase the deficit built in that second inning. Joey Cantillo earned the win for Cleveland, going 5.0 innings and allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts and 5 walks, improving to 7-3 with a 4.05 ERA.
Texas entered the game riding a five-game winning streak and sitting at 43-42, first in the division. The loss snapped that run. Cleveland moved to 44-41, second in the division.
