Seattle needed a performance to snap a two-game skid. George Kirby and Cole Young provided one. Kirby worked eight innings, Young hit two home runs, and the Mariners pulled away from the Angels, 6-2, before 37,100 at T-Mobile Park.
Kirby allowed 2 runs on 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7 across 8.0 innings on 100 pitches, earning his seventh win against seven losses, with a 3.81 ERA. Young was the offensive engine, going 3-for-3 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI. Cal Raleigh added 2 RBI on a single, and Dominic Canzone contributed a solo home run.
Los Angeles led 2-1 through three innings. Zach Neto had given the Angels an early cushion, scoring on Denzer Guzman's first-inning single and then homering to left center in the third. Young answered with a solo shot to center in the bottom of the third to make it 2-1. The turn came in the fourth: Raleigh singled to left, scoring Randy Arozarena and Josh Naylor to give Seattle a 3-2 lead it would not relinquish. In the sixth, Canzone homered to right center to extend the margin to 4-2, and Young capped the inning with a two-run homer to right, scoring Naylor and pushing the final to 6-2.
Ryan Johnson took the loss for Los Angeles, falling to 1-3. He allowed 3 runs — 1 earned — on 4 hits over 5.0 innings, striking out 3 without a walk. The Angels managed 8 hits on the night but could not sustain pressure against Kirby after the third inning.
Seattle moved to 42-43, ending a two-game losing streak. Los Angeles, which had won two straight entering the game, fell to 36-49.
