Nothing was going right for Cleveland through seven innings. Seattle had built a 4-1 lead and was three outs from a road win. Then the eighth inning happened.
The Guardians sent five runs across in the bottom of the eighth to turn a comfortable Mariners advantage into a 6-4 lead they would not relinquish. Daniel Schneemann started it, singling to center to score Brayan Rocchio. Chase DeLauter followed with a single to center that brought home Ingle and Schneemann, tying the game at 4-4. Then Rhys Hoskins doubled to left, scoring DeLauter and Steven Kwan to give Cleveland the lead for good. Hoskins finished 2-for-2 with 2 RBI on the night.
Seattle had controlled the game to that point. Mitch Garver singled to right in the second to score Cal Raleigh, and Josh Naylor's double in the third brought home Rodríguez. Naylor then scored on an error — a throwing mistake by shortstop Rocchio — to push the lead to 3-0. Victor Robles scored in the sixth on an infield single by Rodríguez, making it 4-1 after Travis Bazzana's sacrifice fly had cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fifth by scoring Gabriel Arias.
Emerson Hancock gave Seattle a quality start, allowing 1 run on 5 hits over 5.2 innings with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks on 97 pitches. Gavin Williams absorbed the early damage for Cleveland, giving up 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits over 5.0 innings with 6 strikeouts. The loss fell to Michael Rucker, who allowed 4 runs on 2 hits in just one-third of an inning — his first loss of the season. Matt Festa earned his second win, and Cade Smith recorded his 26th save, working around a Seattle run in the ninth when Young scored on an error by second baseman Bazzana.
Cleveland moved to 42-40, sitting second in the division. Seattle, despite the loss, remains at 42-41 atop the division standings.
