Nothing was settled until the final out. The Angels trailed by three runs entering the eighth inning, clawed back to even, surrendered the lead again in the 10th, and still found a way to win. Logan O'Hoppe's infield single to the catcher brought Nolan Schanuel home with the walk-off run, giving Los Angeles a 7-6 victory over Baltimore on Wednesday night at Angel Stadium.
Samuel Basallo carried Baltimore's offense. The catcher went 2-for-5 with two home runs and 4 RBI, accounting for all four of the Orioles' runs through three innings. His first homer, a 434-foot shot to right center in the second, brought Pete Alonso home and tied the game at 2-2. An inning later, Basallo connected again — this time 373 feet to right — with Alonso aboard to push the lead to 5-2. Basallo entered the night hitting .257 with 12 home runs and 35 RBI on the season.
The Angels' comeback began in the eighth. Vaughn Grissom singled to left to score Donovan Walton, cutting the deficit to two. Then Wade Meckler singled to right, and both Grissom and Schanuel scored to tie it at 5-5. Baltimore answered in the 10th when Alonso singled to right and Ward scored to put the Orioles back in front, 6-5. The Angels responded immediately. Oswald Peraza scored on an error by pitcher Keegan Akin, tying the game at 6-6. Two batters later, O'Hoppe's infield single ended it.
Akin took the loss, his first of the season, allowing 2 runs — neither earned — in 0.2 innings. Chase Silseth earned the win, his third against one loss, pitching 1.0 inning and allowing 1 run. Silseth carries a 2.10 ERA. Jorge Soler had homered in the first to give the Angels an early 2-0 lead, going 1-for-3 with 2 RBI on the night.
Pete Alonso went 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI for Baltimore. He is now 3 doubles away from 200 career doubles. Los Angeles improved to 33-48. Baltimore fell to 38-43.
