Parker Messick controlled the game from the start, pitching 5.2 scoreless innings to lead Cleveland past Philadelphia 3-1 on Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park.

Messick allowed five hits and struck out six while walking two over 91 pitches. The left-hander carried a 2.24 ERA into the game and improved to 5-1 on the season. Steven Kwan went 3-for-4 with an RBI to pace Cleveland's nine-hit attack.

The Guardians broke through in the fifth when Kwan singled to left, scoring Schneemann to make it 1-0. Cleveland extended the lead in the sixth as Hoskins doubled to left, bringing home DeLauter for a 2-0 advantage. Philadelphia answered in the seventh when Harper hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Marsh to cut the deficit to 2-1. Bazzana sealed the victory in the eighth with a 412-foot homer to right field.

Andrew Painter took the loss for Philadelphia, allowing 2 runs over 6.1 innings. He gave up six hits and struck out three while walking two. Painter carried a 5.40 ERA and fell to 1-4 on the season.

Cleveland snapped a one-game losing streak and improved to 31-23. Philadelphia's record moved to 26-26 after winning their previous game.
