Cleveland controlled the game from the third inning forward, riding Joey Cantillo's scoreless start to a 3-1 victory over Detroit at Comerica Park. The Guardians extended their winning streak to five games while the Tigers fell to their fifth straight loss.
Cantillo earned his fourth win of the season, allowing no runs on 3 hits over 5.2 innings with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks. The left-hander carried a 3.38 ERA into the game and kept Detroit off the scoreboard until the eighth inning. Hunter Gaddis closed out the victory for his first save of the season, striking out 2 in a perfect ninth inning.
The Guardians broke through in the third inning with two runs. Rocchio scored on Schneemann's double to right field, then Schneemann came home on Ramírez's single to left. Patrick Bailey added an insurance run in the eighth with a 407-foot home run to right center. Detroit's only response came in the bottom of the eighth when Dillon Dingler homered to left center.
Casey Mize took the loss for Detroit, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits over 6.2 innings with 4 strikeouts and no walks. His ERA stands at 2.47. Dingler provided the Tigers' lone bright spot, going 2-for-4 with a home run and RBI, his ninth homer of the season.
Cleveland improved to 29-22 and maintained first place in the division. Detroit fell to 20-30 and sits in fourth place. Brayan Rocchio had a perfect 3-for-3 night with 2 doubles for the Guardians.
