Shane McClanahan dominated through six shutout innings and the Tampa Bay offense provided just enough support in a 3-0 victory over San Francisco at Tropicana Field on Thursday night.
McClanahan (3-2) allowed five hits without issuing a walk, striking out five batters over 73 pitches. The left-hander carried a 3.10 ERA into the game and held the Giants scoreless despite allowing baserunners in multiple innings.
The Rays built their lead with three solo scoring plays across the middle innings. Yandy Diaz homered to right field in the second inning for the game's first run, then Junior Caminero added a 432-foot blast to left field in the fourth. Chandler Simpson's sacrifice fly to left brought home Taylor Walls in the sixth inning for the final margin.
Robbie Ray (2-4) took the loss for San Francisco, allowing three runs over 6.1 innings. Ray struck out five and walked none but surrendered the two home runs that proved decisive. Bryan Baker earned his eighth save with a scoreless ninth inning for Tampa Bay.
The Rays improved to 18-12 and snapped a one-game losing streak. San Francisco fell to 13-18, extending their losing streak to three games. Diaz is 10 runs away from 500 career runs and four hits away from 1,000 career hits, while McClanahan sits 14 strikeouts away from 500 career strikeouts.
