The game turned on one swing in the eighth inning. Corbin Carroll's grand slam to left center field broke a 2-2 tie and carried Arizona to a 6-2 victory over Toronto at Chase Field.
Carroll finished 1-for-3 with four RBIs and a walk, extending his strong season that now includes three home runs and 16 RBIs while batting .309. The centerfielder's 389-foot blast scored Ildemaro Vargas, Alek Thomas and Ketel Marte, who had reached base ahead of him.
The teams traded early runs in the first inning. Sánchez singled to center to score Nathan Lukes for Toronto, but Geraldo Perdomo answered immediately with an RBI single that brought Carroll home. Thomas doubled home a run in the fifth to give Arizona a 2-1 lead, but Kazuma Okamoto's RBI single in the sixth tied it again at 2-2.
Jeff Hoffman took the loss for Toronto, allowing four runs on three hits and a walk in one inning of work. His ERA now stands at 7.71. Juan Morillo earned the win for Arizona with 1.1 innings of one-hit relief, carrying a 2.61 ERA.
Arizona extended its winning streak to three games and improved to 12-8. Toronto fell to 7-12 with its third straight loss. Vladimir Guerrero is five games away from 1,000 career games played.
