Max Muncy discussed his go-ahead home run off Zack Wheeler and the game-ending defensive play against the Philadelphia Phillies during a press conference on July 21, 2026.
Muncy said the defensive play meant more to him than the home run, pointing to the work he has put into his defense. "The defensive play to me means more than the home run," he said.
Describing the at-bat against Wheeler, Muncy explained his read on the situation before the swing. "Runner on first, one out, I thought he was going to try to do something to get into a double play," he noted. He added that the pitch he hit for the home run was one Wheeler had already thrown him three times in the previous at-bat. A claim attributed to Muncy indicated the ball was hit 102 mph off the bat to center field.
On the game-ending double play, Muncy described his read on Justin Crawford during the bunt attempt. "I was able to read Crawford off the bat," he stated. He also mentioned wanting to continue developing on that side of the ball, saying, "I want to keep growing over there and keep getting better."
Muncy acknowledged the physical demands of the recent schedule, referencing two doubleheaders the team played in one week. "Two doubleheaders in a week, that's a little too much," he said, adding that the team simply has to deal with the conditions. He also explained the club's broader approach, saying, "We just take it one day at a time."
Asked about an organizational leaderboard, Muncy said he hadn't been aware he was close to the milestone until being informed after the game. "I actually didn't know that. I know I was getting close, but I didn't know that one did it," he said. He added that appearing on any leaderboard within the organization means he has done something right, calling it meaningful to him.
