The game was settled before most of the crowd at Chase Field had found their seats. Adrian Del Castillo's three-run homer to right in the bottom of the first inning put Arizona ahead 3-0, and that early burst proved enough to withstand a Milwaukee rally and hand the Diamondbacks a 4-3 victory over the first-place Brewers.
Del Castillo finished 1-for-3 with 3 RBI, his blast traveling 414 feet and scoring both Corbin Carroll and Gabriel Moreno. It was his fifth home run of the season for a player hitting .192 with 25 RBI on the year. Merrill Kelly made the lead stand, working 5.0 innings and allowing 2 runs on 8 hits with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks. He picked up his sixth win against eight losses, carrying a 5.71 ERA. Paul Sewald closed it out, earning his 20th save with a 1.0-inning effort that allowed 1 run on 1 hit with 2 strikeouts.
Milwaukee cut into the deficit in the fifth when Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer to right center, a 418-foot shot that scored Brice Turang and pulled the Brewers within 3-2. Arizona answered in the eighth when Ildemaro Vargas doubled to left, scoring Jorge Barrosa to push the lead to 4-2. Jackson Chourio's solo homer to left center in the ninth, his 13th of the season, made it a one-run game, but Sewald retired the side to preserve the win.
Brandon Woodruff took the loss, falling to 2-2 after allowing 3 runs on 2 hits over 3.2 innings, with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk. He threw 61 pitches. Milwaukee finished with 12 hits on the night — Brice Turang went 3-for-5 with two doubles — but the Brewers could not overcome the hole dug in the opening frame. Yelich went 1-for-5 with 2 strikeouts.
Arizona improved to 43-44 with the win, snapping a two-game losing streak. Milwaukee, the NL Central leaders at 54-32, had their winning streak stopped at one.
