Boston had the game in hand before the sixth inning began. Jake Bennett made sure it stayed that way.
Bennett worked 7.2 innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 runs and walking none while striking out 6 on 92 pitches. He picked up his third win against three losses, with a 3.10 ERA. Aroldis Chapman finished the ninth, allowing 2 hits but no runs, to record his 17th save of the season.
The Red Sox struck first in the second when González scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Jarren Duran. Boston added 3 more in the third: González singled to right, scoring Wilyer Abreu and Willson Contreras, then Caleb Durbin scored on Duran's sacrifice bunt — aided by an error by first baseman Nolan Schanuel. Durbin added a solo home run to left in the fifth, a 358-foot shot, to push the lead to 5-0. Romy Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, and Duran drove in 2 runs without recording a hit.
Reid Detmers absorbed the loss for Los Angeles, allowing all 5 runs on 7 hits over 5.0 innings, walking 3 and striking out 5 on 104 pitches. He falls to 3-6 with a 4.21 ERA. The Angels managed only a pair of runs in the eighth — Jose Siri homered to right center at 408 feet, and Zach Neto singled home Josh Lowe — but the deficit was too large to overcome.
Boston dropped to 37-48 despite the win, extending its losing streak to two games before this victory snapped it. Los Angeles fell to 36-52, losing for the third straight time.
