The game turned in two bursts. Toronto built a lead in the first inning and never surrendered it, then blew the game open with four-run innings in the third and seventh to hand the New York Mets a 9-3 defeat before 41,842 at Rogers Centre on Wednesday.
Myles Straw provided the signature moment of the evening. With Toronto already ahead in the seventh, Straw homered to left center — 397 feet — scoring Varsho and Kirk to push the lead to 9-0. He finished 1-for-1 with 3 RBI on the night. The third inning had done much of the damage earlier: Ernie Clement doubled to right, scoring Kazuma Okamoto, and then a three-run home run to left extended the advantage to 5-0. Clement went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Okamoto was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Alejandro Kirk crossed the plate twice.
The scoring began in the first when Okamoto reached on an infield single to shortstop and Lukes scored to give Toronto a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish. That proved to be the final go-ahead play of the game. Spencer Miles earned the win, throwing 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing 1 hit, walking 1, and striking out 5 on 46 pitches. He is now 4-1 with a 2.83 ERA. Patrick Corbin closed it out with 5.0 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits with 5 strikeouts, earning his first save of the season.
Freddy Peralta absorbed the loss, falling to 5-7. He lasted just 4.0 innings, surrendering 5 runs on 7 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts on 91 pitches, with a 4.63 ERA. New York managed only 5 hits on the night. Carson Benge homered to left center in the eighth — a 406-foot shot that scored Baty — and Francisco Lindor added a solo shot to left in the ninth, but the Mets were never in the game after the third inning.
Toronto improved to 40-45 and snapped a previous skid, while New York dropped to 35-50 and extended its losing streak to two games.
