San Diego did not need a dramatic moment. The Padres simply added a run here, another there, and by the time Atlanta mounted any response, the margin was too wide to close. The final score was 5-2, and SD has now won two straight.
Ty France was the engine. He homered to left in the third — 417 feet, the game's first run and its go-ahead blow — then added a sacrifice fly in the fourth that scored Manny Machado. France finished 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, carrying a .252 average with 9 home runs and 26 RBI on the season. JP Sears backed him up from the mound, working 5.2 innings and allowing 2 runs on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks. Sears earned his first win of the season, now 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA. Jason Adam closed it out with a scoreless ninth for his second save.
San Diego kept adding. In the fifth, Xander Bogaerts singled to center to score Fernando Tatis, pushing the lead to 3-0. Atlanta answered in the sixth when Joey Bart homered to left, a two-run shot that scored Austin Riley and cut the deficit to 3-2. But SD responded immediately in the bottom half: Samad Taylor singled to right, scoring France and J. Bowen to make it 5-2 and effectively end the contest.
Martin Perez absorbed the loss for Atlanta, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits over 4.0 innings with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. He falls to 6-4 with a 3.00 ERA. The Braves managed 6 hits but could not sustain pressure against the San Diego staff.
Atlanta dropped to 48-30, now on a three-game losing streak. San Diego improved to 41-37, second in the division, and has won back-to-back.
