Nothing separated these teams until the seventh inning. Boston had led by as many as three runs and appeared in control entering the late innings, but Colorado scored five times over the seventh and eighth to complete a comeback at Coors Field, winning 8-6 before 27,379 fans.
Cole Carrigg was the engine of the rally. The Colorado infielder went 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI, driving in runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Tyler Freeman contributed 2 RBI and scored twice, going 2-for-3. Willi Castro added three hits in five at-bats. On the Boston side, Ceddanne Rafaela went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Connor Wong homered and drove in 2 runs on a 2-for-4 night.
Boston built its lead methodically. Willson Contreras doubled to center in the first, scoring Rafaela. In the second, Wong homered to left — a 380-foot shot — with Seigler aboard, pushing the lead to 3-0. Colorado chipped away in the third: TJ Rumfield doubled to right to score Castro, and Carrigg's sacrifice fly brought Freeman home, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Boston answered in the fourth with Andruw Monasterio's solo homer to left (365 feet) and a run-scoring single by Rafaela, stretching the lead back to 5-2. Colorado got one back on a Freeman single in the fourth, and Anthony Seigler's double in the fifth scored Marcelo Mayer to make it 6-3. Then the Rockies went to work. Three runs in the seventh — on singles by Carrigg, Jake McCarthy, and Troy Johnston — tied the game at 6-6, with Johnston's single to center scoring Carrigg as the tying run. In the eighth, Mickey Moniak scored on Freeman's sacrifice bunt to give Colorado the lead for the first time, and Carrigg's double to right scored Castro to make it 8-6.
Ranger Suarez pitched well enough to win. The Boston starter worked 6 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits with 9 strikeouts and 1 walk on 102 pitches, carrying a 2.94 ERA. The bullpen could not hold it. Justin Slaten allowed 4 hits and 2 runs in 1 inning, dropping to 0-4 with a 6.48 ERA. Kyle Freeland gave Colorado 6 innings, allowing 6 runs on 11 hits with 4 strikeouts, but received no decision. Antonio Senzatela threw 2 scoreless innings to earn his eighth win against no losses, with a 2.13 ERA. Jimmy Herget closed it out with a perfect ninth, striking out 2, for his second save.
Colorado improved to 31-49, sitting fifth in its division. Boston fell to 32-45, also fifth in its division.
