Nothing was settled through nine innings at Rogers Centre. The Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays traded leads, matched each other's rallies, and arrived at extra innings knotted at six. Then Joey Loperfido ended it with one swing.
Loperfido's three-run homer to right in the 11th — 379 feet, with Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez scoring ahead of him — gave Houston a 9-6 lead it would not relinquish. It was the go-ahead play that defined the game. Loperfido finished 1-for-1 with 4 RBI. For Toronto, Kazuma Okamoto went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and 2 walks, and Daulton Varsho was 3-for-6 with a home run and 2 RBI, but neither could overcome the 11th-inning burst.
Houston built a 4-0 lead through four innings on a pair of solo shots. Yainer Diaz homered to left in the fourth, Cam Smith followed with a homer to center, and Taylor Trammell added one to right. Toronto answered in the bottom of the fourth when Urías homered to left, scoring Varsho, to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Blue Jays tied it in the seventh when Varsho homered to right, scoring Okamoto, making it 4-4. Toronto then took the lead in the eighth: Okamoto singled to left, scoring George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero, to put the Blue Jays ahead 6-4. Houston clawed back in the ninth — Altuve scored on a catcher's interference call, then Alvarez scored on a Smith sacrifice fly — to tie it at 6-6 and force extras.
Braydon Fisher took the loss for Toronto, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 1 hit over 2.0 innings, falling to 3-3 with a 3.35 ERA. Logan VanWey earned his first win of the season for Houston, pitching 2.0 innings and allowing 1 run (0 earned) with a 1.50 ERA.
Houston fell to 37-43 with the win snapping a one-game skid. Toronto, despite the loss, extended its winning streak to two games and stands at 39-39, third in its division.
