One swing. Seven innings. That was the entirety of San Diego's formula on Monday night. Manny Machado hit a 418-foot home run to center in the fourth inning, and Michael King made it hold up the rest of the way as the Padres defeated Atlanta 1-0 before 42,572 at Petco Park.
King was the story. The right-hander worked seven innings, allowing six hits and no walks while striking out five on 93 pitches. He did not allow a run, keeping Atlanta's lineup quiet through the middle innings and handing the ball to the bullpen with the lead intact. King picked up his fifth win against six losses, carrying a 3.23 ERA.
The only run of the game came in the fourth. Machado drove a pitch 418 feet to center, breaking a scoreless tie and giving San Diego a lead it would not relinquish. It was his 14th home run of the season. Machado finished 2-for-3 with a walk, accounting for the lone RBI in a game that needed only one.
Atlanta starter Grant Holmes could not match the efficiency. He walked five batters over 4.2 innings, allowing three hits and one run before departing. Holmes fell to 4-4 with a 4.17 ERA. Austin Riley led the Braves offensively, going 3-for-4, but Atlanta stranded enough to leave the offense without a run. Mason Miller closed it out with a scoreless ninth, striking out two and earning his 21st save of the season.
San Diego moved to 39-37 with the victory. Atlanta, the NL East's division leader at 48-28, dropped its second straight.
