The game was decided in the first inning. Houston exploded for 9 runs in the opening frame, then held off Kansas City's furious comeback attempt to win 10-8 at Kauffman Stadium.

The Game Network — Where History Is Kept

Yordan Alvarez carried the Astros' historic first inning, going 3-for-5 with two home runs and six RBI. His first homer, a two-run shot to left, scored Jeremy Peña and gave Houston an early 2-0 lead. After Christian Walker added a solo homer and Taylor Trammell drove in another run with a single, Alvarez delivered the knockout blow—a grand slam to center field that capped the 9-run explosion and put the game seemingly out of reach.

Kansas City answered immediately with 5 runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Vinnie Pasquantino singled home Carter Jensen, Maikel Garcia drove in Bobby Witt with a fielder's choice, Michael Massey doubled home Garcia, and Kameron Misner capped the rally with a two-run single that scored Salvador Perez and Massey. The teams combined for 14 runs in the opening inning alone.

The Royals made one final push in the eighth inning, scoring 3 runs to pull within 9-8. Massey singled home Garcia, Jensen walked to force in Perez, and Witt reached on an infield single that scored Massey. But Brice Matthews answered with a solo homer in the ninth inning that provided the decisive margin. Luinder Avila took the loss after allowing 8 runs in just two-thirds of an inning, while Nate Pearson earned his first win of the season with 2 scoreless innings of relief.

Houston improved to 31-39 despite losing their second straight game. Kansas City fell to 28-41 and extended their losing streak to two games.
