The Mets needed extra innings to escape with a 9-7 victory over Miami on Thursday night at Citi Field, with MJ Melendez delivering a two-run homer in the 10th to end a seesaw affair that saw the lead change hands multiple times.
Melendez went 1-for-1 with three RBI and one run scored, capping his night with the walkoff blast that scored Bruján. The catcher entered the game hitting .213 with three home runs and nine RBI on the season.
The decisive moment came in the 10th when Melendez homered to right, bringing Bruján home for the winning margin. The Mets had built early leads of 4-0 and 6-2, only to see Miami claw back each time. Owen Caissie's two-run homer in the eighth had tied the game 7-7, setting up the extra-inning drama.
Austin Warren earned his first win of the season with a scoreless 10th inning, striking out one in a perfect frame. Peter Fairbanks took the loss for Miami, allowing two runs on one hit in just one-third of an inning. Max Meyer started for the Marlins and allowed 6 runs (5 earned) over six innings with six strikeouts.
New York improved to 23-33 and snapped a losing streak. Miami fell to 26-31 and has now lost two straight.
