The power display began immediately when Brooks Lee homered to left field in the first inning, giving Minnesota an early 1-0 lead. Munetaka Murakami answered in the bottom half with a solo shot to right field, tying the game at 1-1. Drew Romo provided the decisive blow in the second inning, launching a two-run homer to right field that scored Tristan Peters and gave Chicago a 3-1 advantage it would not relinquish.
Zebby Matthews absorbed the loss despite a solid effort, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings with six strikeouts. The left-hander fell to 1-2 with a 2.37 ERA. Seranthony Dominguez closed out the ninth inning for his 11th save, striking out two in a perfect frame.
Chicago snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 26-26, while Minnesota's four-game winning streak ended as they fell to 26-27.
