The game turned on one swing in the fifth inning. Rafael Devers launched a grand slam to left center field, transforming a 4-4 tie into an 8-4 Giants lead that would hold for an 8-5 victory over the White Sox at Oracle Park.
Devers went 2-for-4 with 5 RBI, driving in Adames, Arraez and Schmitt ahead of his own run on the decisive blast. Casey Schmitt provided the early fireworks with a two-run homer in the third inning and finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored.
The White Sox had clawed back from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game in the fifth. Acuña brought home Quero with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, then Montgomery's groundout scored Murakami and Quero's single to left brought Vargas across to knot the score at 4-4. But Devers answered immediately with his seventh home run of the season.
Chicago managed one final rally when Vargas homered to left in the seventh inning, his 12th of the season, but could not close the gap further. The White Sox managed just 4 hits against 11 for San Francisco.
San Francisco snapped a losing streak to improve to 21-31. Chicago fell to 26-25 after the loss.
