The game was scoreless until the ninth inning. Then Heriberto Hernandez ended it with one swing.
Hernandez launched a grand slam to center field in the bottom of the ninth, driving in all four runs as Miami shut out New York 4-0 at loanDepot park. The 416-foot blast capped a dominant pitching performance that kept the Mets off the scoreboard for eight and two-thirds innings.
Hernandez finished 2-for-2 with four RBI and his second home run of the season. The grand slam scored Ruiz, Hicks and Edwards, who had loaded the bases against Mets closer Devin Williams. Edwards contributed two hits and a double, while Hicks drew three walks.
Christian Scott carried the Mets through 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out five. His effort went for naught when Williams entered in the ninth and immediately ran into trouble. Williams faced four batters, walking two and allowing two hits before Hernandez connected. The loss dropped Williams to 3-2 with a 6.35 ERA.
Miami extended its winning streak to two games and improved to 24-29. New York fell to 22-30, losing its second straight. Peter Fairbanks earned the win for the Marlins, improving to 2-2.
