Stephen Kolek threw a complete game shutout, scattering four hits as Kansas City defeated Seattle 5-0 at Kauffman Stadium on Friday night. The Royals snapped a four-game losing streak behind Kolek's dominant performance.
Kolek (3-0) needed just 108 pitches to complete nine innings, walking one and striking out two. The right-hander carried a 2.77 ERA into the game and never allowed Seattle to mount a serious threat.
Kansas City seized control in the first inning with three runs. Garcia scored on an error when Pasquantino grounded into a fielder's choice, with Young's throwing error allowing Witt Jr. to reach second safely. Jensen then grounded out to first, bringing Witt Jr. home. Caglianone capped the rally with an RBI single to right, scoring Pasquantino.
George Kirby (5-4) absorbed the loss, allowing 5 runs over six innings on nine hits. Despite striking out three and walking none, Kirby could not contain the Royals offense that added single runs in the third and sixth innings. Luke Raley provided Seattle's only offensive highlight, going 3-for-3 with a double.
The victory improved Kansas City to 20-31, while Seattle fell to 25-27 and saw their two-game winning streak end.
