The home runs came in waves. Washington overcame a five-run deficit with a grand slam from James Wood and a solo shot from Jose Tena to defeat New York 9-6 at Nationals Park.
Wood went 3-for-5 with four RBI, capping his night with the decisive grand slam in the second inning that brought Vivas, Millas and Nuñez home. Bo Bichette powered the Mets' early attack with two home runs and four RBI, going 2-for-4 with both homers driving in Carson Benge.
Bichette's first homer in the opening inning gave New York a 2-0 lead, followed by Marcus Semien's sacrifice fly that scored Juan Soto. Bichette struck again in the second with another two-run shot, extending the lead to 5-0. Wood's grand slam in the bottom half cut the deficit to one run, and Tena tied the game with a solo homer in the third.
Foster Griffin earned the win despite allowing 5 runs over 5 innings, striking out 5 with no walks. Nolan McLean took the loss, surrendering 9 runs (6 earned) over 5.2 innings for New York. The Mets managed just one run after the second inning, with Soto's solo homer in the seventh providing their final score.
