Miguel Vargas carried the White Sox offense with two home runs, leading Chicago to a 6-1 victory over Seattle at Guaranteed Rate Field. The power display helped the White Sox snap a three-game losing streak behind Anthony Kay's strong pitching performance.
Vargas went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a walk, launching home runs in the third and fifth innings. His first blast, a 410-foot shot to left center in the third, scored Sam Antonacci to extend Chicago's lead to 4-0. Vargas added a solo homer to left in the fifth, answering Seattle's only run with immediate insurance. Colson Montgomery also homered for the White Sox, connecting for a two-run shot in the first inning that scored Antonacci.
The White Sox built their lead early against Luis Castillo, who struggled through four innings. Montgomery's first-inning homer gave Chicago a 2-0 advantage before Vargas extended the margin in the third. Seattle managed just one run when Mitch Garver scored on Rob Refsnyder's sacrifice fly in the fifth, but Vargas responded immediately with his second homer of the night.
Kay earned the victory with five innings of one-run ball, allowing three hits while striking out five. The left-hander gave up one unearned run and walked two batters. Castillo took the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits over four innings with six strikeouts. His ERA stands at 6.57.
Chicago improved to 17-21 and ended its losing streak. Seattle fell to 19-20, seeing its two-game winning streak come to an end.
