The game was decided in the first inning. Yordan Alvarez launched a two-run homer to right center field, and that was all Houston needed in a 2-0 victory over Cleveland at Progressive Field.
Alvarez finished 3-for-4 with the home run and two RBIs, extending his hot start to the season. The slugger is now batting .347 with 11 home runs and 26 RBIs through the early weeks. Carlos Correa, who scored ahead of Alvarez on the decisive blast, contributed a double in four at-bats.
Alvarez's 422-foot homer to right center scored Correa and gave Houston the only runs it would need. The Astros managed just six hits but made the most of their early opportunity against Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee.
Bibee pitched well enough to win most nights, allowing five hits and two earned runs over six innings with three strikeouts. His ERA stands at 4.45 as he continues searching for his first victory of the season at 0-2. Cleveland managed five hits but could not solve Houston's pitching staff, which struck out eight while walking three.
The victory snapped Houston's losing streak and improved the Astros to 9-16. Cleveland, despite the loss, remains atop their division at 14-11.
