Merrill Kelly absorbed the loss, surrendering eight runs on 10 hits over 4.1 innings with a 9.31 ERA. Arizona managed only sporadic offense until the ninth inning, when Ildemaro Vargas homered with two runners aboard to cut the final margin.
Chicago improved to 8-14 and snapped a losing streak. Arizona fell to 13-9. Nolan Arenado reached 1,000 career runs in this game, while Lourdes Gurriel sits eight RBI away from 500 career RBI.
