Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas took full responsibility for a mental error on a bunt play during the team's 3-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium on July 7, 2026.
Rojas said during a press conference that he committed two errors in the game — one physical, a missed ground ball, and one mental, a failure to cover third base on a bunt — and that the mental lapse weighed on him far more. "Physical errors happen and I'm okay with that... but mental errors are the ones that I kind of like disappointed," he stated.
Rojas explained that the bunt toward third base caught him off guard because conventional strategy in that situation would be to bunt toward first. "In that situation you're trying to bunt to first because of he's holding the bat. So, when he bunted to third I kind of like I watched the play," he noted, describing how he froze and drifted toward second base instead of breaking to cover third. "I kind of froze and I I was like all over the like all over the second base over there and I shouldn't be there," he added.
Rojas also expressed regret for the pressure his misread placed on his teammate Alex. "I shouldn't be putting my Alex feeling on the situation of throwing the ball with me on the run there," he acknowledged, taking direct responsibility for putting Alex in a difficult position by running when he should not have been.
Describing the moment the mistake registered, Rojas said: "I watched the play and then I realized that I Oh, I got to go to third and that's when I I I felt like I made the mistake." He added that had he been in the correct position, the Dodgers could have kept the game tied and preserved a chance to win: "I should have been on third base and and we kept the game tied right there and gave us an opportunity to win."
