Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts provided injury and roster updates on five players at a press conference on June 17, 2026.
Roberts said Teoscar Hernández is on track to take batting practice on June 18, 2026, followed by a simulated game, and then begin a rehab assignment. "He's taking batting practice tomorrow. He's going to do like a simulated game here and then I would assume that he goes out on rehab early next week," Roberts said. On Will Smith, who is dealing with a neck issue, Roberts noted that a return by June 20, 2026 is unlikely. "We're trying to make sure he's out of the woods," he added, emphasizing the goal of preventing any regression once Smith returns.
Roberts explained that Tommy Edman, who underwent ankle surgery and completed a minor league rehab stint before rejoining the roster, is expected to play approximately three or four days per week, primarily at second base, third base, or left field. Roberts stated he sees Edman slotting into the eight or nine spot in the lineup against left-handed pitchers. Roberts acknowledged that Edman's ankle issue is not completely resolved, but said it is being managed by Edman and the Dodgers training staff. The reduced role in center field, Roberts explained, stems from Andy Pages' development rather than Edman's recovery status. "When we acquired him, Andy was cutting his teeth and now Andy is on the cusp of making his first All-Star game," Roberts said, describing Pages as an everyday player.
Roberts also mentioned that he has not watched video of Edman's minor league stint but expressed hope that a healthy Edman with consistent at-bats will return to his known offensive level. Separately, Roberts praised young outfielder Brian for holding his own on the major league stage, citing his power skill set, solid defense in left field, and ability to grind at-bats despite some swing and miss. Roberts noted that Brian's continued presence on the roster is a direct result of his performance and conduct, even following a roster move.
Regarding Shohei Ohtani, who was coming off a left knee issue, Roberts said he will monitor Ohtani closely by watching his mannerisms, demeanor, and command. "As we sit here right now, he's ready to go. Feels good," Roberts stated, adding that the staff will keep a close eye on him going forward.
