The Detroit Tigers signed Verlander to a one-year, $13 million contract in February 2026. Verlander posted a 3.85 ERA with a 4-11 record in 29 games during the 2025 season. In 2024, he compiled a 5.48 ERA with a 5-6 record over 17 appearances.

Verlander's first start of the 2026 season lasted 3 2/3 innings against the Diamondbacks, allowing six hits, two home runs and five earned runs. He posted a 3.85 ERA, 20.7% strikeout rate and 7.9% walk rate over 152 innings for the Giants in the 2025 season.

Keider Montero was called up from Triple-A Toledo to take Verlander's spot on the 26-man roster. Verlander has logged 579 2/3 innings from 2022-25.
