The New York Mets hired J.D. Martinez as a special advisor to baseball operations.
Martinez sat out the 2025 season after not signing anywhere following his 2024 campaign with the Mets. He hit 16 home runs for New York in 2024, roughly half his total from the previous season when he connected for 33 home runs with the Dodgers but saw his strikeout rate jump to 31.1 percent.
The veteran slugger finished his playing career with 6,865 plate appearances across 1,642 games, accumulating 1,741 hits including 331 home runs. He scored 897 runs and drove in 1,071 RBI over his career.
Martinez previously played for the Mets in 2024 on a one-year deal worth $12 million with deferrals that was signed in March. He spent 2023 with the Dodgers on a one-year, $10 million contract and played out a five-year, $110 million deal with the Red Sox from 2018-2022.
