The Chicago White Sox traded infielder Curtis Mead to the Washington Nationals for catcher Boston Smith.
Mead was designated for assignment earlier in March 2026 after falling short of an Opening Day roster spot. He hit .233 with a couple of home runs in 10 spring games during the 2026 season.
The infielder batted .240 with zero home runs in 41 games with the White Sox during the 2025 season after coming over in the Adrian Houser trade. He made his major league debut with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2023, recording a .253/.326/.349 slash line in 92 plate appearances as a 22-year-old.
Mead's professional journey began when he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as a minor league free agent in 2018. He was traded to the Rays for Cristopher Sanchez in 2019 before eventually joining the White Sox. To create a 40-man roster spot for Mead, Washington designated lefty Jake Eder for assignment.
