St. Louis led early, Arizona answered late, and by the time the eighth inning ended, the Diamondbacks had turned a tight game into a rout. Arizona scored 10 runs against the Cardinals on Wednesday, five of them coming in a decisive eighth inning that put the game away well before St. Louis could complete a furious ninth-inning comeback attempt.

Tyler Locklear carried the Arizona offense, going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. His homer to left in the fourth inning erased a 1-2 deficit and gave Arizona a lead it would not relinquish. He added a run-scoring single later in the game's decisive eighth, part of a night in which the Diamondbacks racked up 16 hits as a team. Adrian Del Castillo also factored heavily, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
The turning point came in the fourth, when Tawa's sacrifice fly brought home Kepler to cut the St. Louis lead to 1-2, and Locklear followed immediately with a two-run homer to left that put Arizona ahead 3-2 for good. Arizona added a run in the fifth on Moreno's sacrifice fly, scoring Carroll, before the floodgates opened in the eighth. Del Castillo, Locklear, Tawa, Carroll and Moreno each drove in a run during that frame, as Arizona sent runners across on a string of singles and another sacrifice fly, turning a 4-2 game into a 9-2 advantage. Arenado added another RBI single in the ninth to make it 10-2.
St. Louis starter Michael McGreevy took the loss, allowing 4 runs (4 earned) over 6.1 innings with 7 hits, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts, falling to 4-8 on the season. The Cardinals bullpen could not stem the tide either, and Arizona's Brandon Pfaadt earned the win by working 6.0 innings and allowing 2 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits, improving to 5-1. St. Louis did not go quietly, scoring two runs in the first on doubles and RBI hits from Jordan Walker and Lars Nootbaar, and then rallying for four more runs in the ninth. Torres singled home Church and Wetherholt, and Nootbaar followed with a two-run single of his own scoring Torres and Burleson, but the deficit proved too large to overcome.
The result dropped St. Louis to 52-50 as its losing streak reached one game, while Arizona improved to 54-49, its third straight win extending a hot stretch for the Diamondbacks. Arizona sits second in its division, with St. Louis third.
