Nothing moved for six innings. Then the seventh inning swallowed the Cardinals whole. Milwaukee trailed 3-0 heading into the top of the seventh, but four runs later the Brewers had the lead and never gave it back, winning 4-3 at Busch Stadium on Monday night.

Dustin May was the best pitcher on the field and had nothing to show for it. The Cardinals starter struck out 7 and allowed no runs over 4.2 innings, working on 81 pitches with a 4.55 ERA. He left with St. Louis ahead, and the bullpen could not hold it. Ryan Fernandez entered in the seventh and recorded no outs, allowing 2 hits and 3 runs (2 earned) before the damage was done. Shane Drohan, meanwhile, absorbed three runs across six innings — only one earned — and earned his fourth win of the season against two losses, carrying a 2.97 ERA.
The Cardinals had built their lead methodically. In the third, Pagés scored on a fielder's choice by Velázquez, and Wetherholt scored on a Fermín single to make it 2-0. Masyn Winn's single to left in the sixth brought Velázquez home to push the advantage to 3-0. It felt like enough. It wasn't. David Hamilton's double to right scored Mitchell and Frelick to cut the deficit to one. Then Brice Turang singled to left, scoring Ortiz and Yelich to give Milwaukee a 4-3 lead — the go-ahead blow the Brewers would not relinquish. Turang finished 1-for-4 with 2 RBI on the night, bringing his season totals to 12 home runs and 53 RBI. Hamilton went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.
Trevor Megill closed it out in the ninth, striking out 2 in a scoreless inning to earn his 14th save of the season with a 3.00 ERA. The Cardinals' bullpen allowed all four Milwaukee runs across 4.1 innings of work from four relievers.
Milwaukee improved to 56-33, extending its winning streak to two games. St. Louis fell to 47-41, dropping its second straight.
