The game was effectively over by the third inning. Eury Perez was untouchable, Miami's lineup was relentless, and Oakland never had an answer — until it almost did.
Perez was the story from the first pitch. The right-hander worked seven innings without allowing a hit or a walk, striking out eight on 92 pitches. It was a 7-inning scoreless effort that gave the Marlins all the cushion they would need, and then some. He picked up his fifth win of the season against six losses, carrying a 3.84 ERA.
The offense did its part early and often. Heriberto Hernandez opened the scoring in the first with a solo home run to center, 437 feet. In the second, Marsee scored on a ground rule double by Otto Lopez, and Navarreto came home on a sacrifice fly by Liam Hicks. The third inning brought the knockout: Leo Jimenez's two-run homer to left center, 405 feet, made it 5-0, and Lopez added a sacrifice fly to push the lead to six. Lopez then homered to center in the sixth, and Hernandez followed with another home run to center — his second of the game — to put Miami ahead 8-0. Hernandez finished 3-for-4 with 2 home runs and 2 RBI. Lopez went 3-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBI.
Oakland starter Gage Jump absorbed the damage, lasting just 3.0 innings while allowing 6 runs on 8 hits with 3 walks and 1 strikeout. He fell to 3-3 on the season with a 3.98 ERA. The Athletics' offense was silent through seven, but came alive in the eighth. Jonah Heim's grand slam to right — 371 feet — brought in Kuroda-Grauer, Cortes, and Muncy to make it 8-5. In the ninth, a passed ball by Joe Mack allowed Gelof to score, and Heim then singled to center to bring home Butler and Muncy, pulling Oakland within 9-8. Heim finished 2-for-4 with a home run and 6 RBI. The rally ended there.
Gage Jump's early exit set the tone for Oakland's night. The Athletics managed just 7 hits and could not overcome the deficit their bullpen was left to defend. The late surge — 8 runs over the final two innings — was dramatic but ultimately insufficient against a lead that Perez had built from the first inning on.
Miami improved to 48-42 and extended its winning streak to two games. Oakland fell to 41-48, losing its second straight. Esteury Ruiz, who scored twice for the Marlins, is five stolen bases away from 100 in his career.
