Hunter Goodman did it all by himself. The Colorado catcher hit three home runs at Target Field on Saturday, accounting for five of the Rockies' eight runs in an 8-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins before 21,115 fans.
Goodman went 3-for-5 with 3 home runs and 5 RBI, raising his season totals to 25 home runs and 47 RBI. He opened the scoring in the first with a 428-foot shot to left, then broke a 1-1 tie in the third with another 428-foot blast to center — the go-ahead run that Colorado never surrendered. His third home run, a 401-foot drive to left center in the seventh, brought in McCarthy and Tovar as well, turning a one-run edge into a four-run cushion. Kyle Karros added a two-run homer in the eighth, a 384-foot shot to left that scored Carrigg, pushing the lead to 8-2.
Michael Lorenzen, working through 5.2 innings, allowed 2 runs on 7 hits with 1 strikeout and no walks on 92 pitches. He picked up his third win against nine losses, with a 6.83 ERA. Jimmy Herget closed it out, recording his third save of the season with 0.2 scoreless innings.
Minnesota starter Michael Paredes took the loss — his first of the season — after allowing 3 runs on 8 hits over 5.1 innings. The Twins made it interesting in the ninth, when Larnach doubled to center to score Keaschall, Lee, and Gray, cutting the deficit to 8-5. But the rally came too late. Trevor Larnach finished 3-for-5 with 3 RBI for Minnesota, and Kody Clemens drove in a run in the first when he singled to center to score Larnach and tie the game at 1-1.
Colorado fell to 32-50 despite the win. Minnesota dropped to 39-44. Jake McCarthy, who went 2-for-5 with a triple for the Rockies, is four stolen bases away from 100 for his career.
