Arizona led for five innings and needed three outs to protect a 2-1 advantage. Then the seventh inning unraveled. A throwing error by right fielder Corbin Carroll allowed two runs to score, and the Minnesota Twins walked out of Phoenix with a 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks on Sunday.
Ryan Kreidler was the catalyst for Minnesota's offense, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Alex Jackson drove in the run that put the Twins ahead for good, singling to right as Kreidler and Josh Bell both crossed the plate — the latter two runs charged as errors on the play. Jackson finished 2-for-3 with 1 RBI. Trevor Larnach added two doubles on the night, including one in the ninth that scored Austin Martin to extend the lead to 4-2.
Arizona had taken control in the second inning when Ketel Marte doubled to center, scoring both Nolan Arenado and Ildemaro Vargas to put the Diamondbacks up 2-0. Marte finished 2-for-5 with 2 RBI. That lead held until the seventh, when Royce Lewis scored on a Josh Bell single to make it 2-1. Then Jackson's single to right triggered the errors that gave Minnesota a 3-2 lead it would not relinquish.
Arizona reliever Juan Morillo absorbed the loss, allowing 3 runs — 2 earned — on 4 hits in 1.0 inning, falling to 2-4. Michael Paredes, who started for Minnesota, went 5.0 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits with 3 walks and 1 strikeout. Cody Laweryson earned his first win of the season, working a scoreless seventh. Anthony Banda closed it out with a scoreless ninth for his second save.
Arizona dropped to 39-37 with the loss. Minnesota improved to 37-41, snapping a losing streak with the road victory.
