Detroit needed every one of its 10 innings. The Tigers trailed by two entering the ninth, tied it, fell behind again in the 10th, and then walked it off — Matt Vierling's single to right scoring Riley Greene with the winning run to give Detroit a 5-4 victory over the White Sox on Sunday at Comerica Park.
Dillon Dingler was the engine of the comeback. He homered to left center — 384 feet — in the eighth to cut the deficit to one, then singled to left in the ninth to score Jahmai Jones and tie the game at 3-3. He finished 2-for-5 with a home run and 2 RBI, carrying a .269 average with 18 home runs and 55 RBI on the season.
The 10th unfolded in three acts. Tristan Peters hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Ja. Gonzalez to put Chicago ahead 4-3. Detroit answered immediately: Spencer Torkelson singled to left, bringing home Kerry Carpenter to tie it at 4-4. Then Vierling ended it — his single to right scored Greene, and Comerica Park had its walkoff.
Davis Martin kept Chicago in the game long enough to matter. He went 6.0 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks, carrying a 3.18 ERA. He received no decision. The loss fell to Brandon Eisert, who recorded no outs, allowed 2 hits and 2 runs (1 earned), and was charged with a blown save — his first loss of the season. Will Vest earned the win, his third, working a scoreless inning before the Tigers scored in the bottom of the 10th. Keider Montero started for Detroit and threw 7.0 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts and no walks.
Detroit has won two straight and improved to 32-44. Chicago dropped to 39-36, losing for the second consecutive game.
