The game was tied twice and still undecided through three innings. Then the fourth happened. Miami scored four runs in that frame to turn a 2-2 tie into a 6-2 lead, and the Giants never recovered. The Marlins won 6-3 at loanDepot park Saturday, extending their winning streak to two games.
Max Meyer was the engine behind the result. The right-hander went 5.0 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks on 98 pitches. He moves to 8-0 on the season with a 2.80 ERA — the only undefeated pitcher with that many wins in the majors. Peter Fairbanks closed it out with a perfect ninth inning, striking out 2, to earn his 11th save.
The fourth inning told the whole story. Jakob Marsee singled to center, scoring Esteury Ruiz to give Miami the lead at 3-2. Then Xavier Edwards grounded into a double play, but Marsee scored on the play to push it to 4-2. Heriberto Hernandez followed with a two-run homer to left, 389 feet, scoring Otto Lopez and making it 6-2. Hernandez finished 1-for-3 with 2 RBI. The go-ahead run had come on Marsee's single, and Miami never looked back.
San Francisco's Casey Schmitt was the lone bright spot for the visitors, going 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, and 2 RBI. His solo shot to center in the fourth — 414 feet — tied the game at 2-2 moments before Miami's burst. Drew Gilbert went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Jung Hoo Lee was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored. But Trevor McDonald lasted only 3.0 innings, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 3 hits with 3 walks and 1 strikeout on 69 pitches. A fielding error by McDonald in the second inning contributed to Miami's early advantage. He falls to 2-5 with a 4.93 ERA.
Miami is now 38-38, back to .500 and winners of two straight. San Francisco drops to 31-44.
