The game was over before the third inning arrived. Cincinnati put up three runs in the first and six more in the second, and the Mets never recovered. The final score was 12-0, and it was not as close as that suggests.
Eugenio Suarez was the engine of the offense. He went 2-for-4 with two home runs and six RBI — a two-run shot to left center in the first inning and a grand slam to center in the second that stretched the lead to nine. His season totals now stand at seven home runs and 25 RBI, hitting .222. JJ Bleday added a three-run homer to right center in the eighth, finishing 2-for-4 with four RBI and a walk. He carries 13 home runs and 34 RBI on the season.
The damage came in waves. In the first, Blake Dunn scored on a groundout by Spencer Steer, and then Suarez's two-run homer to left center brought home Sal Stewart to make it 3-0. The second inning was more decisive. McLain scored when Bleday walked, and Stewart singled to right to score Stephenson. Suarez then homered to center, scoring Arroyo, Bleday, and Stewart to push the lead to 9-0. Bleday's eighth-inning homer brought home McLain and Stephenson to complete the scoring at 12-0.
Chase Burns handled the pitching side with ease. He worked five innings, allowing no runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks on 100 pitches. He moves to 8-1 with a 2.01 ERA. Tobias Myers absorbed the loss for New York, lasting just 1.1 innings and allowing seven runs on four hits and three walks. He falls to 0-2 with a 5.71 ERA.
In a losing effort, Bo Bichette went 3-for-5 for the Mets and reached a career milestone in the process, collecting his 200th career double in this game. Cincinnati improved to 33-37. New York fell to 32-39.
