The Giants broke through in the fifth inning with three runs. Gilbert doubled to left to score Lee, then Chapman homered to center field to bring Gilbert home. Chapman added another RBI in the seventh when Eldridge singled to left to score him. Susac provided insurance in the eighth with an RBI single that scored Schmitt.
Colin Rea took the loss for Chicago, allowing four runs over 4.2 innings. He struck out two and walked three on 90 pitches, falling to 5-5 on the season. The Cubs managed their only run in the eighth when Swanson scored on a throwing error by first baseman Schmitt.
San Francisco improved to 28-43, snapping their losing streak. Chicago fell to 37-34, ending a three-game winning streak. Webb is eight games away from 200 career games played.
