Tanner Bibee controlled the strike zone for seven innings, and Cleveland held off a late Detroit rally to defeat the Tigers 3-2 at Progressive Field.
Bibee struck out eight batters while allowing just two hits and two runs over seven innings, earning his second win of the season. The right-hander walked two and threw 91 pitches in his dominant outing, carrying a 3.96 ERA.
Cleveland built its lead early with two runs in the second inning. Bailey singled to left, bringing Hoskins home, then Rocchio tripled to right to score Bailey. The Guardians added an insurance run in the sixth when Kwan singled to center, scoring Martínez.
Detroit answered with solo home runs from Outman in the third inning and Spencer Torkelson in the eighth. Outman's 418-foot blast to right center was his first homer of the season, while Torkelson's 416-foot shot to center brought the Tigers within one run. Jack Flaherty took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits over three innings for Detroit.
Cade Smith closed out the ninth inning for his 22nd save, striking out one in a perfect frame. Cleveland snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 37-33, while Detroit fell to 29-40 despite winning their previous game.
