Mike Soroka controlled the game from the first pitch, allowing one run over seven innings as Arizona defeated Washington 5-1 at Chase Field.
Soroka scattered three hits and struck out six batters while walking two. The right-hander improved to 8-3 with a 3.28 ERA, working efficiently through 100 pitches to earn his eighth win of the season.
Arizona built its lead through timely hitting. Corbin Carroll opened the scoring with a 417-foot home run to center in the first inning. After Cal Abrams tied the game 1-1 with a solo homer in the second, the Diamondbacks pulled away with three runs over the fourth and fifth innings. Gabriel Moreno delivered the key blow in the fifth, launching a two-run homer to left that scored Tommy Troy and extended Arizona's lead to 1-4.
Cade Cavalli struggled for Washington, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings. The left-hander struck out two and walked one but could not contain Arizona's offense, falling to 3-4 with a 3.88 ERA.
Arizona improved to 34-31 and snapped a losing streak. Washington fell to 33-33 after the loss.
