The Athletics turned a 1-1 tie into a commanding lead with a devastating two-inning stretch, scoring six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to defeat Cleveland 7-1 at Sutter Health Park.
Aaron Civale earned the victory with six innings of one-run ball, allowing seven hits while striking out three. The right-hander carried a 2.95 ERA and improved to 3-1 on the season.
Oakland's offensive explosion began in the fifth inning after Chase DeLauter homered to left to tie the game 1-1. Gelof answered immediately with a 429-foot homer to left, then Soderstrom followed with his own blast to right center. Rooker capped the inning with an infield single that scored Hernaiz. McNeil delivered the knockout blow in the sixth, doubling to right to score Gelof, Wynns and Soderstrom.
Parker Messick absorbed the loss for Cleveland, allowing four runs on six hits over five innings. The left-hander struck out six but could not contain Oakland's power surge, falling to 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA.
Oakland extended its winning streak to two games and improved to 17-14, maintaining first place in the division. Cleveland fell to 16-16 despite snapping a brief losing streak.
