Vargas went 1-for-5 with three RBIs and two strikeouts, carrying a .381 average into the game. His three-run blast capped a four-run fifth inning that put the Diamondbacks ahead for good.
Baltimore had built its early advantage on Samuel Basallo's 431-foot homer to center in the second inning and Leody Taveras' RBI walk in the third. But the fifth inning belonged to Arizona. Vargas homered to left center, scoring McCann and Barrosa, then Fernandez doubled to center to score Perdomo and extend the lead to 4-2.
Merrill Kelly earned the win for Arizona, allowing five hits and two runs over 5.1 innings with three strikeouts and four walks. His ERA stands at 3.38. Trevor Rogers took the loss for Baltimore, giving up nine hits and four runs in 4.2 innings despite striking out six. Paul Sewald closed out the ninth for his sixth save.
Arizona snapped a one-game losing streak to improve to 9-8. Baltimore's three-game winning streak ended as they fell to 9-7. Sewald is 20 strikeouts away from 500 career strikeouts and 10 games away from 400 career appearances.
