Marcelo Mayer has been named the Boston Red Sox starting second baseman for the 2026 season by manager Alex Cora.
Campbell had been the team's starting second baseman during the 2025 spring training and was named American League Rookie of the Month in April after signing an eight-year, $60 million contract. However, he struggled after April and was sent to Triple-A in June, remaining there for the rest of the 2025 season. Campbell batted .220 with one homer and four RBIs in 46 plate appearances during the 2026 spring training.
Mayer posted a .228/.272/.402 batting line with four homers and 10 RBIs in 136 plate appearances following his promotion to the Major Leagues in the 2025 season.
The Red Sox also named Caleb Durbin as their starting third baseman for the 2026 season.
